You Magazine

Hey there girlies, well here it is, a collection of my columns - I hope they
bring you lots of helpful tips and a few good laughs. I have been so
fortunate to work with my amazing editor Kelly Gilbert and the phenomenal
Editor in Chief Sue Peart. Ever since I first came to England YOU magazine
has been such a part of my Sunday morning, bacon sarny, ritual. Yes, yes I
have been known to return it back to the paper pile with a few smudgy
fingerprints on it, so it really is a dream to work for such a fabulous
friend. I hope you enjoy looking back over my work - I love writing each
column so much that reading them myself is almost like revisiting a much
cherished diary, they're very special to me xx
He looks pretty fly for a little guy

Oh, I am ridiculously and obsessively in love with my child! No, don’t roll your eyes and slam the magazine shut – I promise I’ll try not to gush too much. Watching my seven-month-old explore his environment has truly been the most fascinating thing in my life thus far. Forget fabulous all-night parties in Marrakech, delicious dinners at the Ivy and front-row seats at the hottest fashion shows – nothing compares. My copies of Vogue have been replaced by Mother & Baby and my wardrobe dilemmas are a thing of the past. I now wear a uniform of drainpipe jeans and Trimester Tees T-shirts – a T-shirt company for pregnant women that I’m still devoted to because the tops have such fun phrases printed on them. For instance, Kill for Coffee is incredibly apt for my 6am wailing wake-up calls. Trips to the shops revolve entirely around the little guy, and I love it – what merchandise there is for Finn!

To match my own T-shirt fetish I have developed one for him. His Kit N Kin T-shirts are emblazoned with iPods, headphones and all the latest cool accessories. Made from comfy cotton and easily washable, they are irresistible. And to throw on over the top as the weather gets cooler, Bamford & Sons has the finest cashmere jumpers – Finn’s favourite being a light-grey one with a little piggy on it that I wish was available in my size (you see, I have lost my single-girl marbles!).

The most covetable accessory you can get for a little one right now is a FlatOut Bear. All the celeb mums have been going crazy for them, so much so that stockists have now compiled waiting lists. They are soft and cuddly, like a normal teddy, but totally flat, so baby can lie on it and hug it easily. They’re made from 100 per cent pure Australian sheepskin and are the most adorable things you’ve ever seen. I’m tempted to buy one in every colour but have settled for the latte shade.

One of the most special things you can do is have a cast made of your baby’s feet. The Magic Custard Company uses a specially developed mixture in its DIY casting kits that can be used quickly, causing no discomfort or allergic reaction, to take a detailed cast of your baby’s tootsies. Any part of you or your child’s body can be commemorated – one of the most divine moulds being that of a child’s hand in his or her mother’s. I can tell you that Finn is already sick and tired of my constant sculpturing, but then, I told you I was obsessed!

OK, I was fibbing slightly when I said shopping is totally for Finn now, because I’ve found a very hip jewellery company, Boutique To You, selling ‘Mummy’ and ‘Daddy’ dog-tag necklaces created from silver recycled from photographic film. Each tag is handcrafted especially for you and is engraved with your child’s name and date of birth (you can have names added as your family grows; I hope to be weighed down by dog tags over the next few years…).

All these goodies are great, but, of course, all a baby – or anyone – really needs is love.

'They say you make your own luck. I've found, though, that if you're open to it, luck sometimes comes to you. Luck came my way one morning four years ago when Normandie Keith came by the office to say hello. She confided to us, she was a would-be writer with a fascination for the world of pampering. I suggested she had a go at writing something, expecting never to hear from her again. Twenty minutes later, the fax machine clicked into life and out whirred Normandie's first piece written in longhand, with flowers and stars drawn in the margin. A columnist was born. Since then Normandie has written more than 200 columns for YOU. She has shared with us her beauty tips and circumnavigated the globe in her intrepid search for the latest, newest, most fabulous beauty treatments on offer. But as well as opening her little black book of recommendations and addresses, Normandie has opened her heart to us too.'
